Is Your Vehicle Roadworthy? Decoding Blue Slip and Pink Slip

If you are a vehicle owner in New South Wales, roadworthy certificates are essential to drive your vehicle.  You must have come across terms like blue slip and pink slip that are obtained to prove the vehicle’s fitness or worthiness for roads. Most vehicle owners have heard about them and have even received them. But only a few know its significance. So, let’s decode them and understand their importance for registration checks, vehicle inspection and insurance.

Pink Slips:

Pink slips are required for vehicles that are older than five years. You can get it from the mechanic. The mechanic conducts a vehicle inspection and certifies that your car is roadworthy. So, after getting the pink slip, you can re-register your vehicle.

How do I get a pink slip?

The mechanic will inspect the vehicle thoroughly to determine if it is fit for the road. Once issued by the mechanic, it can be used for 42 days to register the vehicle in NSW.

A qualified mechanic inspects the lights, engine, wipers, and other systems during the vehicle inspection. If the vehicle has any problems, the mechanic will issue a failed pink slip. The vehicle owner must address the issue and get the necessary repairs within 14 days. If not, the vehicle owner must pay again for a pink slip.

The validity of the final inspection report in the case of pink slip is 6 months.

Blue Slips:

Blue slips are required when you want to re-register your vehicle from a different state or if it has not been registered for over three months. They also signify that the car is safe to drive.

How to get a blue slip?

Blue slips involve a more detailed vehicle inspection. The mechanic checks for leaks, suspension, lights, brakes and other essential components.  They are valid for 28 days from the day of issuance. The mechanic may deny a blue slip if problems are found in the vehicle. In that case, the vehicle owner must resolve the issue within 14 days.

Without a blue slip, one cannot drive the vehicle, which would be considered unregistered. Meanwhile, you can only drive your vehicle to the service centre. Only after fixing the issue is the vehicle considered roadworthy.

Green Slips

Green slips are Third-Party Insurance Policies that are required to cover damage costs in case of accident or injury.

Remember that insurance is not covered under blue slip and pink slip. You must obtain a green slip for insurance.  It is important to get the green slip before you obtain or renew the vehicle’s roadworthy certificate. Green slip provides insurance coverage for people’s medical expenses and income loss due to accident injuries.

If you are driving in NSW when the accident occurs, you will get the covered amount. Different policies may apply to interstate driving.

Which slip is required when?

If your vehicle is older than five years, you may need a pink slip once a year. A blue slip may be required for re-registration, obtaining the roadworthy certificate, or selling the car. However, you will always need the green slip as it covers your insurance.
